Charleston Tomato Pilau

INGREDIENTS
2 slices bacon, chopped
1 lg. onion, finely chopped
4 cups canned tomatoes
1/4 tsp. sugar
1-1/2 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. black pepper
2-1/2 cups raw rice
INSTRUCTIONS
Cook bacon in frying pan until brown; add diced onion, cover pan and sauté lightly. Add tomatoes, sugar, salt and pepper. Cook over low heat for 1/2 hour, stirring frequently. Add rice and cook 5 to 10 minutes. Transfer mixture to rice steamer; cook 45 minutes. Ten minutes before serving, stir with fork. Uncover steamer to dry rice.
