Servings: 4 servings

INGREDIENTS

8 slices french bread
sliced ham
sliced swiss or gruyere cheese
2 eggs
1 Cup Milk
String
Butter
Oil

INSTRUCTIONS

Whisk together the 2 eggs and cup of milk in a shallow glass dish (a glass pie pan will do). Set aside.

Lay out four slices of bread. Layer with ham and cheese - I like two slices of medium thin ham and two slices of medium thin swiss. Place top pieces of bread on sandwiches. Using string, tie sandwiches together, leaving long string "tails" you can hang on to.

Heat about a tablespoon of butter and two tablespoons of oil in a pan, on medium to low heat. The oil should keep the butter from burning, but keep an eye on it. Once the butter has melted, go ahead and dip your sandwiches.

One by one, dip your sandwiches in the egg mixture, wetting first one side, then the other. Quickly transfer each sandwich to the hot pan, frying until bread is golden brown and cheese is melted. Flip and brown other side.

Transfer to plate. Cut the string and remove it. Cut sandwiches, and sift powdered sugar over top to taste. (Some people like them without the powdered sugar, but I don't understand those people!

CHEF COMMENTS

This is a grilled version of the sandwich, reminiscent of Monte Cristo, but without the turkey. It puffs up when you fry it, and it's absolutely delicious with powdered sugar sprinkled on top!
