Definition
A pre-dinner beverage consumed to "open the appetite." The preferred beverage has changed from century to century and culture to culture. Originally, this beverage consisted of medicinal and therapeutic herbs. The Romans mixed wine with honey for consumption before the meal. Today, the most common aperitif is sparkling wine.
