broccoli

An Italian vegetable that is cultivated for its fleshy green heads of flower buds. The flower buds can also be blue or purple in color. Typically only the flower buds are eaten, however the stalks are also edible and are occasionally packed and eaten like asparagus.

Broccoli was originally cultivated in Italy, but is now grown in many parts of the world, most notably France and the United States.
