antipasto

The Italian term for cold hors d'oeuvres that is derived from the Latin word "ante," meaning "before," and Italian word "pasto," meaning "meal." Examples of antipasti are melon wrapped with prosciutto, beef carpaccio, Parma ham with fresh figs, olives and marinated vegetables with warm bread available on the side.
